Debt financing in Vancouver

Debt financing for acquisitions, expansion, equipment and working capital, structured around how the business generates cash. We size the facility, build the lender package and run the process from introductions to closing.

When debt fits

Six situations where debt does the work

Debt is the cheapest capital a business can raise when the cash flow can carry it. The work is in matching the facility to the need.

Financing an acquisition

Senior and subordinated debt, alongside vendor financing and equity, sized to what the combined business can service.

Expanding capacity

A new facility, location or production line funded with a term loan whose repayments start when the investment produces cash.

Buying equipment

Equipment loans and leases matched to the useful life of the asset.

Funding working capital

Revolving lines, receivables and inventory facilities for seasonal cycles, large orders or slow-paying customers.

Refinancing

Replacing expensive or restrictive debt, extending maturities or consolidating lenders as the company matures.

Bridging to the next event

A bridge loan ahead of a sale, an equity round or a refinancing, with an exit the lender can see.

Financial modeling in Vancouver

Lending in Vancouver

How lenders look at Vancouver companies

Vancouver companies borrow from a wide market: the commercial banking teams of the major banks, British Columbia’s credit unions, BDC, asset-based lenders, private credit funds and family offices. Lending decisions rest on cash flow, security and the quality of the information, and each lender weighs them differently.

Over the years we have built relationships with Canadian banks, non-bank lenders and private credit funds, so we know which lenders are active, what they look for and how to present a company to them. We also move quickly when a financing is time-sensitive.

Read how banks use EBITDA and DSCR to size a loan.

Cash flow first

Most senior lenders size a loan on EBITDA and debt service coverage. A normalized view of earnings, with one-time costs explained, can change how much a company is able to borrow.

Real estate as security

Many Vancouver owners hold significant real estate inside or alongside the business. It can support a larger or cheaper facility, but it should be structured so the operating company is not overexposed.

Acquisition financing

Buyers of private companies often combine senior debt with vendor take-back financing and an earn-out. Lenders look closely at how the pieces fit and who bears the risk if the forecast is missed.

Covenants that fit

A covenant package written for a stable year can be tripped by a seasonal dip or a large project. We model covenants against downside cases before you sign, not after.

Our view

Borrow for the plan, not just the opportunity

Debt is a commitment to a schedule. It works when the repayments, covenants and security match how the business earns, and it becomes a constraint when they do not.

We approach every financing as part of the capital structure rather than a single loan. That means modeling the downside before the upside, and choosing the lender whose terms fit the plan, not just the one with the lowest rate.

How an engagement works

Five steps from assessment to closing

Timing depends on the size and complexity of the facility and each lender’s credit process. You receive a written proposal with the scope, stages and fee before any work begins.

Need equity as well as debt? We can structure both, including mezzanine and venture debt, as part of one plan.

Frequently asked questions

Debt financing questions we hear most often

Most lenders start from cash flow, usually a multiple of EBITDA and a minimum debt service coverage ratio, and then look at the security available. We model what lenders are likely to support before any approach.
